words by Joanne Ball
James Cameron becomes the first person in 50 years to dive to the Mariana Trench. He made the 11km dive in a one man submarine, named Deepsea Challenger, and re-emerged from the depths after three hours. The dive was just off the coast of Guam, an island in the Pacific Ocean. He is the second person in history to make this dive, and the first to do it solo.
He celebrated by sending a tweet as he reached the ocean floor: “Just arrived at the ocean’s deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can’t wait to share what I’m seeing w/ you@DeepChallenge.
