By Tom Bale

Stuart Hazell has pleaded guilty to murdering schoolgirl Tia Sharp during the fifth day of his trial at the Old Bailey.

The 12-year-old was last seen on August 3 last year at the house of her grandmother, Hazell’s partner, and her body was discovered in her grandmother’s loft a week later.

Hazell, 37, had previously denied murdering and sexually assaulting the schoolgirl at the home in New Addington, South London but changed his plea as he felt Tia’s family had “suffered enough.”

The jury originally heard that Hazell told police that Tia had had an accident and hidden her body in the loft in panic. Prosecutors have claimed that Hazell had a sexual attraction towards Tia.

When police originally searched the house, blood was found on bed linen and two memory cards were also discovered, one in the kitchen and another hidden on top of a doorframe, which contained large amounts of pornography, much of which featured young girls.

Three video clips and 11 still photos of Tia sleeping were also found.

Hazell has been convicted of crimes in the past stretching back to 1991, including for drug dealing, racially aggravated assaults, burglary and grievous bodily harm.

Whilst police were searching for Tia, Hazell had said she was “like my own daughter.”

The 2013/14 Nerve Radio committee roles are open for business!

We on the committee team have loved being able to run the station for the past year but now it is time to share this experience and opportunity with you guys.

The committee roles are now up for grabs and applications are open for the whole of the committee team for 2013/14. It is a lot of fun but we are looking for dedicated, talented and experienced students to pass the titles overs to and run Nerve Radio for the next academic year.

Each year Nerve Radio grows bigger and better, and we need a team who is will be able to push the station to the next level and of course, if you are successful, it will look great on your CV.

Applications

To apply for any of these roles, please send 500 words to explain; why you want the position, what experience you have and what makes you the best for the role, to charlotte@nervemedia.org.uk

Remember to sell yourself and please make sure entries clearly specify the editorial position in the email subject line.

You can apply to more than one role but make clear which is your preference.

Deadline

The final deadline for applications is 9am Monday 20th May. Any applications submitted after this date will not be considered.

Following applications, we will hold interviews later the same week and the next if necessary.

Successful applications will take part in a handover week if they are taking over a new role.

The following committee positions are now recruiting for 2013/14:

STATION MANAGER

Charlotte:

To be Nerve Radio’s station manager you have got to love radio. This may sound obvious but you need to be willing to immerse yourself in Nerve and radio as a whole and this is quite a big task.

In this position you will be leading a large committee and a station of hundreds of volunteers, each member’s interest in radio varying in degrees of genre, style, experience and overall commitment. This requires an ability to work with all these levels, testing your communication skills, your patience when are likely to be phoned/emailed/tested anytime between 7:30am and 11pm seven days a week, your confidence to stick to your guns on your ideas/plan – but also willing to compromise/change plans with the advice of your committee.

Organisation is also vitally important, I took on this role in my final year which meant balancing my degree, my commitments to Nerve as a station and as a presenter, other work experience and dare I say – a social life. Honestly, your commitments to Nerve need to be pretty much second to your degree, or else the station is likely to suffer if you cannot commit.

Typical tasks as station manager include organising committee meetings, coming up with creative exciting new ideas to challenge Nerve’s current output, leading the recruit for new members, keeping the quality of the FM fortnights strong, provide written reflection on Nerve events for SUBU and other promotional work, and liaising with SUBU.

Finally it may seem silly now to get this far through the description and think otherwise but you must be enthusiastic for this role else you will not enjoy the time you spend working so closely with Nerve.

DAYTIME CO-ORDINATOR

Rupert:

Within this role you are responsible for making sure there is a full schedule of presenters and shows from 9am-5pm, along with this you also have to work closely with the news team to make sure there are regular bulletins built into the schedule.

Along with scheduling, the daytime co-ordinator is the first person daytime presenters will come to with any queries or problems, whether this be time slots, technical difficulties and show/feature planning. More specifically to this year, the daytime co-ordinator is also in charge of the flagship shows for the station. These breakfast and afternoon shows require a higher quality programming and this means we need producers along with reliable presenters and it is up to you to select the right people for the job.

Outside Broadcasts are also a big part of the job and a lot of these can fall into the daytime bracket. In order for these to be successful you need to be organised, make sure the presenters are aware of what is going on – especially if this changes the schedule – and have good communication with tech team so the right equipment is set up in the relevant place with plenty of time before we are due to broadcast.

The Daytime Co-ordinator works very closely to the station manager and the evening specialist co-ordinator, so in order to successfully complete this role, good communication is key but also to have keep a good sense of humour, it comes in handy.

EVENING CO-ORDINATOR

Abi:

Over the past year, I have been fortunate enough to take on the role as Evening Co-Ordinator. The first responsibility I have is filtering through of potential applicants for evening shows and organising a timetable that suits everyone. This involves a lot of patience and organisation in order to create a timetable that suits everyone. Then you need to have a thorough understanding of Ofcom rules, and the ability to implement them so you can give the correct guidance to presenters and producers. A wealth of knowledge about radio itself as well as experience in the field will enable you to do this. It’s important to have fun and make friends, but you must also know your boundaries and have the balls to come down on people when they’ve messed up. You must also be able to handle complaints and assist where needed at all times. I’m sure many of you know I get a lot of Facebook messages, emails and calls/texts a day with queries or the need to swap show times etc. so it is important to be available as often as you can to give a helping hand to those who need it. Obviously this is within reason but it is important for people to feel like they can rely on you. You should have a great understanding of the desk and how to run it, as when things go wrong you will the person people will turn to. This is not to say know everything but a basic knowledge of how to cue tracks, where to find certain tracks, why the CD-Js might not be playing correctly, how to tell whether the sound levels are correct etc. Finally you must also be able to gauge whether a show is good – does it have good features, are the songs the right genre, does the specific presenter need extra training/pointers on certain areas?

HEAD OF NEWS

Anushka:

The position of Head of News is a very rewarding one. Not only do you earn the respect of your peers within the world of journalism, but you also learn a lot about yourself. From early morning start, to long working hours, and juggling a degree on top of it, it can seem quite a daunting task at first. But once you settle in and establish a strong team around you, you realise that not only can you do all of the above, but you also miss it when it’s gone. Along the way you will make many friends within the Nerve Radio team. You will also learn new skills such as time management, communication and leadership skills, along with a range of technical experience gained from working with Scoop and Myriad for the bulletins and News Discussion Shows. There will be frustrating times when your team haven’t replied to your messages about updating the latest bulletin schedule, or when there may be no one available to record that interview, or simply when you feel like it is taking over your life completely. But embrace those times, because without them you can never truly say you have experienced what it is like to be a news editor, manager or a radio journalist. As long as you are committed to the role, whilst knowing when you need to say no, you will succeed. You may not always be your team’s favourite person, but one thing you will have is their respect – which is a vital component for any editor to run a successful newsroom. Finally, don’t feel like you need to know everything. As long as you improve throughout the year and are open to suggestions that can only improve your team and Nerve Radio as a whole, you will see the results.

HEAD OF SPEECH

Chris:

As Nerve Radio’s Head of Speech, I’ve been spending the year managing and improving the speech content of Nerve Radio. This mainly consists of giving feedback and advice to presenters, with the aim of improving how their show sounds. It’s also about helping develop ideas and features, where someone may come to you with an idea which they want tips on how to make work. As the Head of Speech, you have to be able to think of creative and innovative solutions to problems, as well as coming up with ideas on how to improve the sound of Nerve* Radio. You also have to be able to give constructive feedback to presenters – not always easy if the show needs lots of work! You have to have good knowledge of the Nerve schedule, and be able to know the strengths and weaknesses of different presenters, to help with scheduling. Acting as part of the committee, you need to be able to think of ideas, events, and activities which can help with Nerve’s on air sound. If you’re creative, able to give constructive criticism, and passionate about Nerve’s sound, then Head of Speech may just be the position for you!

HEAD OF TECHNICAL

Richard:

Head of Technical at its basics is responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the studios and the Outside Broadcast kit. A good knowledge of audio is useful, but largely it is the knowledge for the inner workings of broadcast desks and audio mixing desks and different types of audio cables that will enable you to take on this role. Very often if there is a problem with the studios you will be the person the station will be relying on, so it is also vital that you are available and willing to come in at short notice. If this is not possible, then you will need to have a good ability to troubleshoot over the phone and give good direction for solutions.

HEAD OF PRODUCTION

Bryony:

As head of production you’ll be responsible for all of the station’s sounds. Making sure idents, trails, jingles and adverts are sounding tip top with your fabulous editing skills. You’ll need to have a good working knowledge of Adobe Audition, Burli and the Nerve* radio studios. You also need to be flexible with your time at Nerve*, primarily with your production team that you will be leading and working with you. As well as imaging/branding for the station, you may also be needing to make jingles/adverts for sponsors and SUBU events/campaigns. It is incredibly important for you to meet deadlines and organise your production team to meet these too. This exciting role opens doors to live broadcasting experience and everything Nerve* has to offer. So if you have a sharp ear for detail, creativity and a passion for radio, then this is the position you should be applying for.

HEAD OF MUSIC

James:

As Head of Music, my main responsibility is selecting and uploading all of the music that is played on Nerve throughout the daytime schedule. This involves keeping up to date with the latest tracks and artists that are currently popular or generating hype, as well as listening to feedback from the audience on what they like and don’t like. The playlist needs to be updated regularly to keep it as fresh and relevant as possible. It is also very important in my role to keep a good relationship with a wide range of PR contacts, bands and local venues, as the possibility for competitions, interviews, live sessions and tracks from up and coming bands are usually organised through these sources. In order to take on this role, you must have a real passion for music, ideally from a wide range of genres, and understand that the playlist should appeal to as many people as possible, while also introducing them to new music.

HEAD OF PUBLIC RELATIONS

Emma:

As head of PR you will be responsible for the public image of Nerve Radio, working closely with students, local businesses, charity groups and members of the public to spread awareness of the station as well as promoting campaigns Nerve is running.
Responsibilities include the recruitment and management of the Nerve Radio Street Team, increasing and maintaining Nerve Radio’s social media presence and encouraging listeners to get involved with the station. Two important times of the year for the head of PR are the bi-annual Nerve Student Showcase FM broadcasts – these are the times of the year where we really push for more listeners and often have even more exciting content on air in the space of two weeks than general online broadcasting. This year Nerve has started running radio masterclasses and workshops, and so internal promotion is also a big part of the role as well.

Important skills include a good knowledge of press release writing, press liaisons and social media tools are desirable.

HEAD OF COMPETITIONS & SPONSORSHIP

Callum:

The aim of this role is to converse with potential sponsors and clients to bring in new and exciting competitions to the station and sponsorship of shows, for monetary or prizes. This will be done in accordance to Ofcom and SUBU regulations. In the past we have worked with Odeon and Disney, and next year it will be about keeping these relationships as well as creating new relationships. You will also prioritise sponsorship for the two headline shows, breakfast and home time, to get sponsorship to bring in a steady stream of profit that can go towards the life of the station. You must be proactive, cheerful, social and above all, self-reliant. You will help shows grow, and help with the running of personal competitions that the shows bring in, in accordance to Ofcom and SUBU.

HEAD OF TRAINING

Josh:

The Head of Training role involves making sure that every single presenter and producer is fully clued up on everything to do with Nerve Radio. From running the desk to Ofcom regulations, the Head of Training is responsible for not only training new recruits at the start of the year, but also offering refresher sessions for those who want to brush up on their skills. To succeed in this role, you need to have plenty of confidence and enthusiasm for Nerve, as well as a sound knowledge of how the station operates. Remember that you will be the face that many new presenters and producers see, and your attitude to training could affect the quality of programmes on Nerve for the next year!
